World Population Day in Asmara

The United Nations Office in Eritrea (UNO Eritrea), Department of Public Information (DPI) together with UNFPA marked the World population Day that was observed on the 11th of July 2006. As this year’s theme of population day focuses on the young people, the day was marked in cooperation with the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS).

The event was commemorated in the presence of invited guests, UN Agency’s Representatives and staff. The commemoration of the event was held at the UN compound, Asmara. The activities focused on two main doings, half marathon run for both young boys and girls and poster competition among young people.

During the commemoration of the event, the acting Resident Humanitarian Coordinator and FAO Representative in Eritrea, Mr. Admir Bay, read the Secretary General’s message on the World Population Day.

In her side the UNFPA country office Representative Dr. Charlotte Gardiner read the UNFPA Executive Director message which highlights the young people’s possession of ideas, energy, and determination to accelerate effective action to reduce poverty and inequality.

As this year’s population day is marked with the 2nd Eritrean youth Festival, it has got a special attention from the national partners. In addition to this, the half marathon competition which covers 21 kilo meters long was conducted. The marathon was organized to sensitize the young people about the UN activities and achievements.

 

Most of the participants were from the famous national athletic clubs. As the result, it was very competitive and many people observed the competition.
