Replacement of school bells made from explosive remnants of war

April 10, 2010: UNICEF in collaboration with the Eritrean Demining Authority and Ministry of Education launched the replacement of 600 school bells made of explosive remnants of war (ERW). The launch took place in five schools and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Eritrea 's regional administration of Debub, mainly the towns and villages of Adi Quala, Indagiorgis, Geza Hamle, Adi Keyh and Una Aegen IDP camp. International day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

April 8, 2010: The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance to Mine Action was commemorated at Expo Compound in Asmara . The observance of the day was spearheaded by the Eritrean Demining Authority in collaboration with UNICEF and other partners. Eritrea is one of 24 countries in the world that are badly affected by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) as a result of the 30 year liberation war as well as the border war of 1998- 2000. Records indicate that one in five people in Eritrea is affected by mines and ERWs. According to the 2004 Landmine Impact Survey, over 650,000 people in Eritrea live in landmine impacted communities. Zero Tolerance against female genital mutilation

February 6, 2010: Residents of zoba Anseba and the town of Keren turned up in multitudes on Saturday 6 February 2010 to commemorate the day against female genital mutilation: Zero Tolerance Against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The theme of the day was the role of men and boys in the eradication of female genital mutilation. The whole day colorful event was characterized by speeches, poems, testimonies, general knowledge, marathon, bicycle race and a carnival show. Different speakers, including children took turns to denounce the practice and its harmful effects. One child, giving a poem, asked rhetorically why women would inflict such a terrible act on their own counterparts. More...
